ADENIKE 2…
Parked at the entrance of our new home, it feels like a century. The rain is failing in strength but a bigger storm is brewing in the Mercedes and it is almost tearing us apart — slowly.
“Nike.” He said, quietly. Too quiet for a conversation but it was louder than clashing cymbals. I heard him but I did not at the same time.
“How could you? You are not the woman I married. You have changed.”
“How so?” I asked, just to hear what he has to say.
“Because of a little, stupid mistake on my part, you decided to drive us to the freaking wilderness where LIONS are and you left me there!”
“How come you are in my car then?”
“Don’t tell jokes now. You know what I mean. You were willing to sacrifice me as a plate of dinner to hungry lions. For a second, you were eager to watch that lion tear me to pieces. ADENIKE!!”
I smiled and looked at him through the mirror and said confidently. “You were willing to make jokes about how stupid I am and obviously how it will be easy to choose between me and a pig in the barn. Seriously? In front of all those people, I was a subject of gossip and crude jokes and you laughed along like nothing. Well…Dare, I am a Queen and I deserve my respect.”
“Respect huh? You laughed with me. You didn’t even show you were offended. Was it my fault? How was I supposed to know? I obviously can’t read minds.”
“No, but you seemed to know just fine. I am not a toy. I have feelings. Of course, I will be pissed but I can’t exhibit any madness in public. I think Tara put on a good show, did she not?” I said coyly.
“ Never do that again. You may be a wildlife researcher but I will not take death threats through one of your pets.” Dare warned.
“ And I, Adenike, will not bow down in any foolish humility to accommodate your stupidity. If you ever insult me, my personality, my work or my family ever again, I promise you, the next time, I will drive off and pay for your funeral. Rubbish!”
With that, I exited the car in anger and went in. It is going to be a long week…again.
